Winifred B. Zimmerman, 86, of Topeka, Kan., passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008, in Sterling. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 30, at First Presbyterian Church, 801 Harrison in Topeka.
Winifred was born Oct. 3, 1921, to August Ahrend and Grace Ella (Phillips) Brinkman in Algona, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Rolfe, Iowa. She attended eight years of county school at Rolfe, and graduated from Rolfe High School. She attended Iowa State University.
In 1939, she married Clyde Willis Zimmerman. They moved to Topeka in the 1940s, where they were members of the First Presbyterian Church. They were married for 58 years, until Clyde's death in 1997.
Winifred received a degree in social work from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. In the 1960s, she was briefly employed at Shawnee County Department of Social Services in Kansas.
She was an activist against war and was arrested for trespassing on railroad property for praying on the tracks in front of the White Train carrying nuclear warheads in 1985. She was an active member of the Topeka Center for Peace & Justice during that time. She often joined protestors demonstrating against the death penalty at the Kansas Statehouse.
She was a charter member of the P.E.O. Chapter FJ in Topeka for 60 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Dian Zimmerman of Sterling; sons,
Ward B. Zimmerman and wife Sara of Boone, N.C., and Aaron K. Zimmerman and wife Marcy of Kansas City, Kan.; sister, Mary Margaret Moore of Laguna Woods, Calif.; brother, E. Phillips Brinkman of Rolfe; grandchildren, Ward A. Zimmerman and wife Sarah of Boston, Brian N. Zimmerman and wife Ngy of New York City, Zachary S. Zimmerman of Raleigh, N.C., Elizabeth Briana Jane Zimmerman of Boone, Grant S. Zimmerman of Kansas City and Maxwell A. Zimmerman of Lawrence, Kan.; and great-grandson, Ward T. Zimmerman of Boston.
Winifred was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and August Brinkman; and husband, Clyde.
