Wilma Alice "Billie" Davis, 90, of Sterling, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today, July 12, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. John E. Roberts officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Billie was born Feb. 1, 1920, in Iliff to Charles Thomas and Edna Laura (Wood) Monroe. She grew up in Iliff, attending school and graduating from high school in 1937.
She worked as a telephone operator until 1940.
On Sept. 29, 1940, she married Sidney "Sid" Wilma Alice "Billie" Davis Davis in Sterling. They moved to Crook, where they farmed for 35 years.
While in Crook, Billie was active in the United Church of Crook, involved in music, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, member of the Crook Women's Club, Home Demonstration Club and Martha's Aid.
They moved to Sterling in 1979 because of Sid's health. He passed away Nov. 30, 1979. From 1979 until retiring in 1998, Billie worked at downtown Sterling Coast to Coast, Journal Office and the Bible Lighthouse. In 1982, she was named employee of the month by Downtown Merchants Association.
After retiring, she spent her time doing volunteer work with the shut-ins. She was a member of First Baptist Church, the church choir and Sterling Regional MedCenter Hospital Auxiliary.
Priorities in her life were her love for God, her children, grandchildren and many friends. She enjoyed flowers, music and reading. She started singing solos at the age of 5. Many friends and neighbors enjoyed the beauty of her award-winning yard.
Billie is survived by her son, Charles Davis and wife Jean of Gilbert, Ariz.; daughter, Betty Jo Carwin and husband Gary of Greeley; brother, Tom Monroe of Greeley; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Gladys Bunning and Vera Bunning; and brothers, Rex Monroe and Eldon "Tex" Monroe.
