Warren Rosevelt "Bonnie" Carlson, beloved husband and father, was called home by his Lord on January 23, 2007.
Visitation will be until 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Christ United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joyce DeToni-Hill officiating. Burial will be at Peetz Cemetery.
Warren was the youngest of nine children. He was born Feb. 6, 1924, on a farm in Raymond, Neb., to Friedolf F. and Annie Myrtle (Fairchild) Carlson. His family moved into Raymond when Warren was two, and then when he was seven, his family moved to a farm east of Peetz, Co.
After his father died in April of 1938, Warren did all the farming until he and his family moved into Peetz. Though he was in school, he worked at the Enterprise Lumber Co. on evenings and weekends for about eight years. Along with working, during all four years at Peetz High School, Warren was the quarterback of the football team.
Following his graduation from high school in 1942, he moved his mother to Sterling. After working through the harvest in the summer of 1942, Warren went to work at Marsau's. He became engaged to Eleanor Marie Cook in that same year.
In 1943, Warren answered his call to duty and joined the U.S. Army. Following Basic Training at Fort Warren in Cheyenne, Wyo., he went off to the 533rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, where he made 37 landings on New Guinea and the Philippine Islands between the years of 1943 and 1945. In December of 1945, he was on his way to make a landing in Japan when the Japanese surrendered and ended the war in the Pacific.
After vigilantly awaiting his return, Eleanor married Warren on Feb. 9, 1946. To that marriage, a son, Olyn Royd, and a daughter, Krysti Kay, were born.
When he returned home in January of 1946 with an honorable discharge, Warren went back to work at Marsau's. He continued to work at Marsau's for 30 years, becoming the store manager. Mr. Marsau sold the business to Warren and two other partners. Warren was president of the corporation for the next 22 years, and sole owner for the last three years before retiring. He served as an advisor to the Northeastern Junior College Automotive Technology program. He then retired in 1997.
Warren was an avid sports fan and an enthusiastic hunter, fisherman and camper. Over the course of about 12 years during the '60s and '70s, Warren enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts and taught many scouts how to camp and cook over an open fire.
During his lifetime, he was an active member of the BPOE and the VFW, as well as a loyal member of Christ United Methodist Church.
Preceding him in death were his siblings: Olga Elvera, Ulrica Eleanora, Sture Fredolf, Thorsten Fretholf, Sigurd Freja, Ragnar Lodbrok, Earl Eric, and Ruth Myrtle; and his grandson, Chad Arron Nienhueser.
Surviving him are his wife, Eleanor "Cookie" Carlson; his children, Olyn and wife Diane Carlson, and Krysti and husband Martin Nienhueser; his grandchildren, Merissa and husband Mark Perkins, Elizabeth and husband Kevin Ramirez, Shaun Nienhueser, and Ericka Nienhueser; and his great-grandchildren, Morgan and Makayla Perkins.
Memorials may be made to Scout Troop No. 15 or the NJC Auto Tech Program.
