Walter E. Scharf

Walter E. Scharf, 79, of Sterling, died Nov. 23, 2007, in Sterling. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. James R. Nash officiating. Services will conclude at the church. There was cremation. Private family inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Scharf was born Feb. 24, 1928, to David and Amalia "Mollie" (Roth) Scharf in Sterling. He lived all his life in Sterling, attending Trinity Lutheran School and graduating from Sterling High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from Dec. 26, 1945, until Nov. 22, 1948, in the South Pacific in Communications during World War II as a Master Sergeant. He was recalled to active service Oct. 10, 1950, stationed with the 109 Air Ways and Air Communications Service Squadron South Post, Fort Meyers, Va., during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged Oct. 9, 1951.

On Nov. 10, 1966, he married Betty Applegit at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sterling. He worked for the Logan County Road Department. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service Jan. 3, 1992. He worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter until March 2007.

He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, holding many offices.

Mr. Scharf is survived by his wife, Betty Scharf of Sterling; aunt, Esther Schuppe of Broomfield; sisters-in-law, Catherine Scharf of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Sherril Scharf of Merino; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Miriam Sager and husband Allen; and brothers, Robert and Leonard Scharf.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
