Walter Hoshel Olick died Sept. 23, 2011, in Loveland. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 27, with Rosary and Vigil service to follow at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial Riverside Cemetery with military rites.
He was born Dec. 7, 1918, to Anton and Maggie Olick in Fort Worth, Texas. His parents moved to Wichita, Kan., in 1923. He graduated from St. Mary's Cathedral in 1937 and worked for the Cudahy Meat Packing Co.
After serving three years and 11 months with the 137th Infantry with the Kansas National Guard, he enlisted in the Army Air Force, serving four years, six months and 224 days. While overseas during World War II he was in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe, Rhineland, Battle of the Bulge and Offensive Europe. He was awarded six Bronze Stars for six campaigns, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation Badge, 9th Air Force Citation and the Belgian Fourragere. After being discharged from the service he worked at the Sioux Army Depot in Sidney, Neb.
He met Stella Feik in Sidney and they were married at St. Peters Catholic Church in Fleming. He and Stella moved to a farm and ranch north of Willard. After farming for several years they moved to Sterling. He worked for the city of Sterling as a police officer. Later, he and Stella owned and operated Olie's Liquor Store for 14 years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and playing ball. He was a lifetime member of the Ameri-can Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and also an honorary life member of The Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his widow, Stella; daughter, Geriane Thomas and husband Roger of Doniphan, Mo.; son, Raymond Olick and wife Linda of Fort Collins; sister, Jo Ann Schwartz of Wichita, Kan.; brother, Lawrence Olick of Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Pauline and Mary; brother, Leon; great-granddaughter, Page Olick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
