Teddy "Ted" James Tomes, 75, of Sterling, passed away Oct. 4, 2010, in Sterling. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Dale Wesley officiating. Services will conclude at the church.
Ted was born April 1, 1935, in Hobart, Okla., to Ira James and Melba Quay (Franks) Tomes.
He attended Oklahoma University from 1954-1956. He entered the U.S. Army at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, serving from 1956-1957. He continued his education at Pasadena College and Pasadena City College from 1957-1958. He was a futuristic designer in 1957 that featured outrigger-type sections on each side of the vehicle. He attended the Art Center Teddy James Tomes School in Los Angeles in 1959, graduating in 1961 with a BSA in architecture and fine design.
In 1955, he helped in the design of the Sterling Country Club with Murrin Cash & Kahn. He designed a radial component construction home, which was the first of its kind in 1969. He also designed the nuclear plant at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, Calif.
On April 13, 1961, he married Sherrie Schott in Las Vegas.
He was an avid photographer. Ted was a blue ribbon winner and took state swimmer in Oklahoma City in 1954.
He was a true believer in Jesus Christ, a great husband, father, grandfather and a greeter, and will someday greet us home.
He is survived by his wife, Sherrie L. Tomes of Sterling; daughter, Tara Metzger and husband Paul of Tijeras, N.M.; sons, Tyler J. Tomes and wife Laura A. of Greeley, and Todd J. Tomes of Buffalo, Wyo.; sisters, Irita Sanberg and husband Bruce of Maple Valley, Wash., and Bev Donovan of Windsor; brother, Rex Luft and wife Janice of Sterling; grandchildren, Christopher, Taralyn, Brittany, Kyle, Chad and Nolan and wife Jesica.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene.
