Stuart Allen Corbett, 79, of Sterling, passed away on June 6, 2012, at Sterling Living Center after a long, hard-fought battle with colon cancer. A memorial service will be held at Chapel of the Plains in Stoneham, at 10 a.m. June 8. A private burial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Olinger Highland Mortuary and Cemetery, Thornton.
Stuart was born on June 17, 1932, in Denver, to Helen and Vincent Corbett. "Stu" graduated from Denver's South High School in 1951, where he competed with the track and swim teams and participated in many school-related functions and events.
Stu joined the United States Air Force later that year and proudly served 4 years during the Korean Action. Stu later served the Colorado and Wyoming National Guards for 28 years.
Stu married Sally R. Lawrence in 1958. The two celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary four years ago with a trip to Sweden.
Stu had a long love affair with antique cars and attempted to rebuild several models over the years — his pride and joy was a 1946 Plymouth convertible he dubbed "Charlotte," which he completed in 1999.
One of his greatest pleasures was volunteering at Sterling Regional Hospital where he was able to help those in need and exercise his affinity for conversation.
Stu was a member of Chapel of the Plains Church, Loves Park Masonic Lodge of Rockford, Illinois, and Denver VFW Post No. 1.
Stu is survived by his wife, Sally; and their two daughters, Shawn Coleman and husband Don and Stacy Corbett and Justo Hernandez; grandsons, Chad Coleman and wife Amanda, Jason Hernandez, Brian Coleman and Marc Hernandez; and great-granddaughter, Claire Coleman. Stu is also survived by his mother, Helen Corbett; brother, Vincent H. Corbett and wife Char, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Vincent W. Corbett; and twin brother, Stanley B. Corbett.
