Obituary

Roy Allen Wheeler of Sterling, Colorado, passed away on September 30, 2025, at the age of 89.

Roy was born on September 1, 1936, in Fleming, Colorado, to B.V. and Ruth (Bamford) Wheeler. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

He graduated from Fleming High School in 1953 and went on to play basketball at Northeastern Junior College and Colorado College. Roy later earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in business management from Western State College.

Roy began his professional career as a high school business teacher and coach in the Ovid, Sedgwick, and Revere school systems. His coaching career was marked by two state football championships, a state and runner-up title in baseball, and a consolation trophy in basketball.

In 1967, Roy and his family moved to Julesburg, Colorado. While in Julesburg, Roy served as mayor, operated the Wheeler Insurance Agency, and began a 23½-year career with Equitable Savings & Loan. After moving his family to Sterling in 1972, he continued his career with Equitable and was executive vice president.

Roy also proudly served two terms as Logan County Commissioner. Following his time in public service, he enjoyed a successful career in real estate in the Sterling area, where he was honored as "Realtor of the Year" while working with Schmale Realty.

On June 3, 1962, Roy married Antonia (Toni) Jankovsky. Together, they raised their three children in the Julesburg and Sterling communities.

He was a dedicated member of Christ United Methodist Church and a longstanding member and past president of the Sterling Lions Club.

Roy loved cheering on his favorite Colorado sports teams and playing weekly card games with his close friends.

He is survived by his wife, Toni; children Robin (Grant) Harden of Erie, Ron (Cristen) Wheeler of Sterling, and Amy (Todd) Graden of Denver; grandchildren Luke Harden, Haley (Garret) Angstead, Regan (Tyson) Weingardt, Matthew (Sydney) Wheeler, and Ava Graden; four great-grandchildren; and sisters Doris Dion and Marian Meitz.

Roy was preceded in death by his infant son, Thomas Wheeler; his parents; and his sister, Betty Haynes Evans.
