Robert "Bob" Slonecker, 96 of Sterling, Colorado passed away from this life on Sunday, September 4, 2022. Viewing will be held from 2-7:00 p.m. with family to receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 8 at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 9 at Christ United Methodist Church with Pastor Kristie Firme officiating. Robert will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.
Robert Nelson Slonecker was born October 10, 1925, in Ft. Collins, Colorado to Lyle Nelson Slonecker and Helen (Yoder) Slonecker. The family moved to Saguache, Colorado until 1937 and then moved to Leadville where Bob graduated from high school in 1943. After graduation, he attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and graduated in 1948 with a BA degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he went to work for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company where he became a Territory Sales Manager, which covered one half the state of Wyoming and handled Firestone Dealerships and commercial auto accounts.
While in Casper, he met the love of his life Marilyn Hopwood. They later married in Casper on November 15, 1952. Bob was transferred to Sterling, CO as manager of the Firestone Store. In 1956, he joined Foxhoven's to run the Tire Operations Dept. Under his management, tire operations grew from one store to four. A Bandag Retread shop was also added.
During this time, Bob and Marilyn welcomed a daughter Mary and a son Jim. After retirement, he was the Assistant Coordinator at the Cooperating Ministries alongside Wilmer Johnson for 8 years.
Bob was very active in the community. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for over 60 years, where he served on many committees and groups. He was very active in Lions club for over 60 years. He was involved in various committees and received numerous Lion awards.
He was the Logan County Parade Chairman through the Chamber of Commerce for 2 years. Bob was involved with Boy Scouts, delivered meals for the Heritage Center, and volunteered at the Tourist Information Center. The greatest joy of his life was spending time with his family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
The family would like to say thank you for the excellent care that Bob received during his stay at Devonshire Acres.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth Fellers, brothers-in-law Marvin Fellers, Dick Hopwood, Larry Hopwood, and Bill Vanschoonhoven.
Bob is survived by his wife Marilyn; children Mary Specht of Eaton, CO, and Jim Slonecker and wife Lori of Buckeye, AZ; sister Rosalie Templeton of Boulder, CO; grandchildren Audrey (Matt) Hawkins, Keegan (Erin) Specht, Braden (Lindsey) Slonecker, and Riley (Gabriel) Slonecker, Blake and Makayla Hawkins, and Rory Specht; sisters-in-law Ramona Vanschoonhoven of Plum City, WI and Karen Olek and husband Jim of St. Paul, MN and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob's family respectfully requests no plants or flowers and those memorials be made in his name to Lion's Rocky Mountain Eye Bank or to Christ United Methodist Church.
