Obituary

To describe Papa within a word count seems nearly impossible. As our family gathers together to celebrate Papa's life, it seems that family is precisely how to convey the life and legacy of Mr. Robert Leon Schott. For even though he has passed on, Papa's kindness, gentleness, humor, and love is manifested in his wife Judy, their five children, and their 14 grandchildren as well as the many other family members and friends who knew him.

Papa left his earthly body Christmas day after a nearly five-month long endurance against pancreatic cancer.

Bob was born to Robert and Amelia Schott on August 4, 1936 in Sterling, CO. He attended grade school in both Atwood and Crook and graduated from Sterling high school in 1954. He spent one year at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, and he graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1962 where he had played basketball. Bob married Judith Lee Smith on September 7, 1958 in Merino. They made their home in Merino where they raised their family. Bob and Judy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008 and later that year moved from Merino into Sterling.

Bob was a man of the land. He engaged in farming for 30 years after which he went to work as manager for the Lower South Platte Water Conservancy District from June 1991 to March 2003.

Bob is survived in death by his wife, Judy Schott, his brother, Gordon Schott, Denver, his daughter Lori (Tom) Gill and family, Merino, and his sons: Bradley (Kelly) Schott and family, Lexington, NE, Jeffery (Suzy) Schott and family, Eaton, CO, Avery (Lori) Schott and family, Milaca, MN, and Tyler (Rita) Schott and Emmett, Colorado Springs. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Robert and Amelia Schott, Leroy and Zada Smith, his brother, Edmund Schott, and his sisters: Betty Karg, Shirley Miller, and Carol Sinkey.

Papa was a man of faith whose aim was to treat people fairly. He embraced others in their struggles and grief and was often called a "gentle giant."

The Schott family is thankful that Papa passed peacefully, and though we already miss him greatly this holiday season, we are grateful that we will always be surrounded by one another to endure the void of his absence. We are knit together by a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
