Reuben was born Oct. 27, 1919 to Philip and Katherine (Schwabauer) Miller on a farm near Fort Collins. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Windsor. He attended school in Windsor and helped on the family farm.
On May 17, 1940, he married Dorothy Purvis in Kimball, Neb. They made a home in Galeton.
During the Depression, Reuben worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps near Red Feather Lakes. He was drafted into World War II and was in the 7th Cavalry and was on his way to invade Tokoyo when the war ended. He was on a ship in Tokyo harbor when the peace treaty was signed. He was one of the first soldiers to enter Tokyo and was present at the flag raising ceremony that began the American occupation of Japan. After the war, Reuben returned to Galeton and worked and farmed until 1954 when he and Dorothy moved to Greeley. Reuben then worked for Cowan Concrete before moving to Sterling in 1960, where he worked for the Colorado Department of Highways until his retirement.
Reuben enjoyed antiques and artifacts and studying local history and geology. He helped to discover the Jones-Miller ancient man site near Laird in the late 1960s. The site was excavated by the Smithsonian and an article was written in National Geographic describing the dig and artifacts found at the site. A permanent exhibition of the site is on display at the Wray museum.
Dorothy passed away in 1996 and Reuben continued to live in Sterling until his death.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Kaiser and son-in-law Rick of Sterling; brothers, Don Miller and wife Donna of Kersey and Walter Miller of Greeley; grandchildren, Chuck Miller of Greeley, Bryan Kaiser of Fort Collins, and Sean Miller and Traci Wright of Sterling; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
