Raymond G. Stone

Raymond G. Stone, 89, of Parachute, died March 6, 2008, in Grand Junction. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 11, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 2 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Chaney-Reager, with the Rev. James R. Nash officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Raymond was born Feb. 20, 1919, to Gunter Thomas and M. (Combs) Stone in Clarkston, Wash. He was raised and worked on his father's wheat farm. He graduated from Lapwai High School in Lapwai, Idaho, in 1937.
From 1937 to 1941, Raymond worked for the Idaho State Game Commission. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in August of 1941. He served in the Engineering and Inspection Office, working in ground forces training of pilots in basic training, and later in medium bomb. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 5, 1945.
Raymond worked in the oil field as a tool dresser and rig operator in Oklahoma City, Okla., from February 1947 to March 1952, when he moved to Sterling. He worked in Denver and the Julesburg Basin until 1963 as a tool dresser and operator, then joined co-workers in rig ownership and development of oil and gas leases in several western states.
He became an independent producer in 1956. He worked as a contractor in drilling, completion and production of natural gas in Uinta Basin, Vernal, Utah, working with all companies having interests there from 1966 to 1974. He was with W. H. Arrington Consultants from 1974 to 1984, retiring from the oil patch at age 65.
In March 1963, Raymond married Elsie Roth in Sterling. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, American Legion, NRA, BPO Elks Lodge and Elks National Foundation, the Heritage Foundation, and was active in RSVP since 1996.
He kept busy as possible in the natural gas development and production in San Juan County, N.M., with Hollander Petroleum LLP et al in his retirement years from 1988 to 2000.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Elsie Stone of Grand Junction; sons, Darrell Craig and wife Jean of North Adams, Mass., Dale Stone and wife Eloise of Tifton, Ga., and Dean Stone of Williamsburg, Va.; sister, Gladys Merritt of Spokane, Wash.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Vivian Taylor.
