R. Burl Brownell

R. Burl Brownell, 71, of Sterling, passed into eternal life on Dec. 15, 2007, in Sterling. Vigil service and Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert L . Wedow officiating. Services will conclude at the church. Private family inurnment will take place at Fleming Cemetery.

Burl was born Nov. 7, 1936, in Sterling to Loyal William and Edith May (Kester) Brownell. He graduated from Fleming High School and attended CU at Boulder.

On Aug. 25, 1959, he married Kathleen R. Boerner at St. Peters Catholic Church in Fleming.

He was quite active in community life. These activities included: Membership in the Fleming Men's Club, serving on the board of the Fleming Co-op Elevator, the St. Peters Parish Council, the FSA County Committee, Highline Electric Co-op Board, the Logan County Planning Commission and the NJC Foundation Committee, and as exalted ruler of the Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336 and president of the Colorado State Rural Electric Association. He was also the operating manager and a founding director of Brownell Farms Inc.

One of Burl's greatest joys were his grandchildren.

Burl is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen Boerner Brownell; his sons, Mike Brownell and wife Laural of Fleming, and Paul Brownell and wife Bonnie of Fleming; his daughter, Julie Gentz and husband Alan of Sterling; grandchildren, Audrey and Craig Brownell, Brian, Cory and Heather Brownell, Isaac, Mariah, Chris, Jennifer and Stephanie Gentz; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother, William Brownell and wife Lena of Dublin, Calif.; sister, Barbara Parker of Clear Lake, Calif.; and brother, Bernard Brownell and wife Roberta of Ozark, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Mary Bianco, Lucille Kennedy, Eileen and husband Louis Marin; brothers-in-law, Jim Boerner and wife Frances, Tom Boerner and wife Martha; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Burl was predeceased by his parents, Loyal and Edith Kester Brownell; in-laws, Charles and Elizabeth Boerner; and brothers-in-law, Joey Bianco, Robert Boerner, Stanley Kennedy and Leslie Parker.

Burl will always be remembered for his enjoyment and zest for life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Plains or St. Anthony's School.
