Patricia Louise "Pat" Roberts was born November 6, 1922 in Indianapolis, IN, the only child of Eugene Henry Bridgins and Josephine Isabell Hanna Bridgins. She attended Washington Township Public Schools and graduated from Shortridge High School with the class of 1940. She studied at Butler University until her marriage to Edward O. Roberts on June 27, 1943. To this union were born three sons Edward O., Jr.; Douglas B.; and John E.
For many years she served the Lord as a dedicated Sunday School worker and church singer at Crooked Creek Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Then, in 1961, when God called her husband into pastoral ministry, Pat's life of service to her Lord intensified, as Pastor Ed served several different churches in central Indiana. During these years, Pat not only assisted her husband in his ministry, but served as an admissions assistant at Butler University. There she was able to complete her college degree, graduating on May 15, 1983 with a dual-major Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Home Economics.
From the early 1960s, Pat was increasingly active in teaching God's Word to all age ranges in the church, from nursery through senior adults. After Pastor Ed's death in 1997, her life began to change directions, and in July 2003, she moved to Devonshire Acres in Sterling, Colorado, where she became a beloved resident and good friend to many. She became a member of First Baptist Church, Sterling, and through the members and fellowship of that church, the Lord restored her passion to teach Scripture and write for local publication. She taught Bible studies in her church, at Devonshire Acres, and in area women's meetings. The last Bible study she led in church was on Sunday, April 8, just two days before her death.
Pat's hobbies included collecting angel figurines and Nativity scenes, listening to Big Band music, studying Art History, writing articles for local newspapers in Indianapolis and Sterling, and, most notably, studying and teaching God's Word.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, and by twin grandchildren Aaron and Katherine.
Pat is survived by her sons and their wives: Ed, Jr. and Melinda Roberts of Fishers, IN; Doug Roberts and Julia Baade of Southport, IN; and John and Deb Roberts of Sterling, CO. Also surviving are her grandchildren and their spouses: Betsy and Rich Gutierrez of Elwood, IN; Sara Jane and Dean VanDyke of Noblesville, IN; Chris and Cindy Roberts of Vincennes, IN; Scott and Mary Roberts of New Palestine, IN; Jennifer Roberts and Joe Bowman of Holland, MI; Laura and Tim Wierenga of Louisville, KY; and Dave and Jennifer Roberts of Sterling, CO. She is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Zoe, Olive, and Sasha; Greg, Shane, Olivia, and Wyatt; Camillia, Connor, Michael, Sean, and Madeline; Matthijs; and Jacob, Quinnlynn, Katherine, Emma, and Liam.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Sterling for use in updating the ladies restroom adjoining the classroom where she taught for 14 years.
