Obituary

Opal Amen passed peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, December 20, 2024. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 30 at Halouska Family Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Pastor Jodie Harless officiating. Opal will be laid to rest beside Alvin in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.

Opal Irene Dubray Amen was born May 1, 1930, at home near Crook, CO to Frank Earnest Dubray and Flora May Summers. She was raised on the farm with her 3 sisters Beulah, Doris (Toots) and Annabelle. She attended school in Crook and graduated from the class of 1948.

In February of 1950, she married her soulmate, Alvin Amen, and they enjoyed over 50 years together.  They lived and farmed in the Crook area where they raised their 5 children. Opal was a stay-at-home mom until her children were raised.

After selling the farm in 1985, Opal and Alvin moved to Sterling where Opal worked for Northeast Colorado BOCES as a scanner for hearing and vision.  In her free time, Opal enjoyed volunteering her time with the Cooperating Ministry (for over 24 years), and shopping for residents at Sterling Living Center and Devonshire Acres.  She was also very active in her church's food ministry helping with the annual German meal as well as the weekly meal in the church soup kitchen.

Opal made friends wherever she went, likely due to her generous spirit, accepting nature, and the ornery twinkling in her eye.  She loved having coffee and eating out with her friends, who she called her Groupie Friends.

She is in preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin, an infant brother (Ralph), her sisters and numerous beloved friends and in-laws.

Opal is survived by her 4 sons Ken (Glenda) of Sterling, Charles of Merino, Jack (Marilyn) of Fairfield, ID, Timothy (Tracy) of Fort Morgan and her daughter Lona (John) Barber of Merino; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grands; in addition to many nieces, nephews and brothers/ sisters-in law.

The family respectfully requests that no plants or flowers be sent, and instead memorial contributions be made to Logan County Humane Society, 2250 Leisure Lane or Hospice of the Plains, 302 N. 9th Ave., Sterling, CO 80751.
