Obituary

Maxine June Kindred, 86, of Sterling, Colorado, formerly of Burlington, passed away on March 1, 2015 with her family at her side. Services will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Burlington United Methodist Church in Burlington, Colorado. Interment will follow at Claremont Cemetery in Stratton, Colorado.

Maxine was born on May 16, 1928 in Morton County, KS (near Rolla, KS) to Galen and Emma (Milburn) Stoner, who were early settlers in the county. She was the eldest of four children. Her father moved the family to Cheyenne County, Colorado in the early 40's where he ran steers and ranched. Maxine graduated from Kit Carson High School at the age of 16. Her childhood memories include the hardships of the Dust Bowl era on the Kansas/Oklahoma border and the rationing times of World War II. Her family moved to Stratton, Colorado following World War II where she met Leo Kindred at a dance. They were married August 10, 1947 at the Evangelical (now United Methodist) Church in Stratton. Their first child, Everett Gene, was born on June 15, 1949 and passed away in 1956 following years of illness. Their daughter, Carol Anne, was born a few years later. Shortly after, Leo realized his dream of owning a farm and the family moved 5 ½ miles south of Bethune, Colorado where they raised wheat, ranched, custom farmed, and drove school buses for the Bethune School District until Leo's death in 1987.

Maxine then moved to Burlington and turned the farm work over to neighbor Les Hopson. While living in Burlington she worked at the Pro Shop and volunteered at the Burlington Welcome Center, enjoying trips with the group around Colorado. She loved to read and would research details of locations and history within the storyline of the novel or non-fiction book of the day. She also loved helping Les and Teresa Hopson whenever needed with their children, Matthew and Rebecca. She was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church and active with the United Methodist Women. Above all, she was a loving and supportive Mother.

In November 2008, Maxine moved to Sterling, Colorado to be closer to her daughter and they enjoyed being able to spend more time together. She also gained new friendships with her Mindy Circle neighbors and enjoyed their summer weekly coffee meetings.

Maxine was preceded in death by her son, Everett; her husband, Leo; parents Galen and Emma Stoner; and brother-in-law, Clifford Messenger.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Monte Keil, Sterling, CO; sisters Carolyn (Ralph) Tryon, Fort Collins, CO and Claudine Messenger, Provo, UT, brother Ronald (Evelyn) Stoner (Payson, AZ), numerous nieces and nephews, and many special friends.
