Marjorie Elva Rieke passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the age of 98. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday, October 2 with family receiving friends from 3 -5 p.m. at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 3 at Christ United Methodist Church with Reverend Brian Kroeger officiating. The service will conclude at the church.

Marjorie was born on November 4, 1918 at the farm house south of Sterling, Colorado. She was born after her twin sister Mary, to Peter and Melinda Schuman. She attended school at Springdale School and graduated from Logan County High School in 1937. After High School, she lived with a couple caring for a lady until she recovered from an illness. In 1938, she went to work at Woolworth's until her marriage to Reverend Victor Hugo Schroeder on May 28, 1938. Victor was the minister at her church. They moved to Bern, Kansas for one year, and then moved to Boulder, Colorado for three years where their first son Paul was born. They then moved to Walsenburg, Colorado and in February 1945 moved to Barstow, California where their second son Victor was born.

On September 3, 1945, Victor was returning home to Barstow from a meeting in Los Angeles and was killed when the train he was on had an accident with another train. Marjorie returned to Sterling with Paul and Victor and lived with her parents. Marjorie's brother, Gilbert introduced her to Virgil Rieke and they were married on November 16, 1947. They had two daughters, Margaret and Virginia. Virgil and Marjorie purchased a farm north of Sterling and built a new home in 1954. Marjorie prepared meals for the men when they were harvesting wheat. Marjorie and the girls would have to drive over eight miles from the house to deliver the meals. They would put up hay, cut ensilage and harvest corn and eat the corn harvest at home. She cherished the trips to the pasture to check the cattle and water tanks.

Marjorie loved working in her yard, flower gardens and growing vegetables. Motoko Mitsuka, an exchange student from Tokyo, Japan came in 1963 and lived with the family for a year. It was truly a memorable experience for them. In 2010, Motoko and her son came back to visit and it was wonderful for the family to see her again. Marjorie loved having family and friends come over to stay, eat and play cards. She loved sewing, doing crafts and watching the Denver Broncos. Marjorie and Virgil loved taking trips to Maine in the fall, to Alaska, Seattle, Washington, Tucson, Arizona, Hawaii and a Caribbean cruise. Marjorie and Virgil were married 54 years.

Marjorie lived at home with Brad and Michelle Anderson, her special care givers until 2016. Over the years she was active in her church, Sunday school, youth group, Bible studies and her community. She was an active member in Extension Homemakers, FFA Mother's Club, 4-H Leader, FHA mother, served birthday parties at nursing homes, Rebecca Lodge, Election Judge for elections, and a Red Cross Lady at the hospital. She helped at Devonshire Acres Country store, GNI Club, the Heritage Center, United Methodist Women and Church Women United.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Victor and Virgil; parents; sister, Mary Johnson and brothers, Glen and Gilbert Schuman.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Paul Schroeder of Denver, CO, Victor Schroeder of Lake Stevens, WA, Margaret (Greg) Sprenger of Sidney, NE and Virginia (Dale) Anderson of Sterling, CO; 7 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Webb of Lakewood, CO; sister-in-law, Florence Goodwin of Ft.
