Maria I. Hidalgo, 71, of Sterling, died Sept. 24, 2007, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with evening services at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Chaney-Reager with Pastor Macario "Mike" Garza officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Maria was born Oct. 14, 1935, to Calixtro Rios and Virginia Vasquez in Rio Hondo, Texas.

She worked as a nurses' aid in home health care. She was a member of the Spanish Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and watching her grandchildren grow up.

Maria is survived by her six children, AnaBel Gonzales Trevino of Laguna, N.M., Jose and Mary Gonzales of Iliff, Graciela and Emmanuel Maldonado of Evans, Eric and JoAnn Hidalgo of Land O Lake, Fla., Arminda Hidalgo and Jorge Hernandez of Sterling, and Nepumoseno Pedro and Kelli Downs of Lakeforest, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Joseph M. Gonzales II, Paul D. Gonzales, Candice J. Peters, Marshal C. Gonzales, Garrett N. Walker, Sara K. Cordova, Adam L. Gonzalez, Tayson A. Hidalgo, Vanessa M. Hernandez and Shyanne T. Hidalgo; six great-grandchildren, Alexis M. Gonzales, Joseph M. Gonzales III, Elijah L. Cordova, Zane Haller, Kalynn Simmons and Elizabeth K. Cordova; and sister, Cruz Fernandez of Spring, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her son, Phillip Eli Hidalgo; nine brothers and sisters, Olivia Vasquez Rios Flores, Ysabel "Maco" Vasquez Rios, Bernardo Vasquez Rios, Ricarda Vasquez Rios Falcon, Maria Trinidad Vasquez Rios Viera, Melquiades Vasquez Rios, Antonio Vasquez Rios, Fidel "Pollo" Vasquez Rios and Adam Vasquez Rios.
