Magdalena Helene Stratman, 74, formerly of Sterling, passed away Aug. 28, 2010, in Orlando, Fla. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, with Vigil service and Recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial wil lbe at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
She was born Magdalena Burkowitz in Marcuvites, Romania, on Feb. 24, 1936. During World War II (1941), Helen, her mother, future step-father and sister escaped via foot to Germany to start a new life.
Helen grew up in the worn torn aftermath of the war in Heidelberg, Germany. As an adult, her first form of employment was a factory worker making pots and pans. Later, she worked in a kitchen for and resided with the Catholic nuns of the church she attended, and thought about becoming a nun.
In the fall of 1961, while attending church services, she met Charles Stratman, an American soldier stationed in Heidelberg. On Jan. 3, 1963, Helen and Charles were married in Heidelberg.
Helen and Charles had two children, Yuwel and David. Helen followed her husband to the United States when he was stationed in Seaside, Calif., in 1964, and continued to follow her husband through his military career until his discharge, when the family moved to Sterling.
Helen became a widow in January of 1976, and in 1979 moved to Orlando, where she began working for ROL's Manufacturing making oil gaskets until her retirement in 1994.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Yuwel Stratman; son, David Stratman; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Stratman; grandson, Zachary Stratman; brother, Hans Sautér; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; 15 nieces; eight nephews; 11 great-nieces; nine great-nephews; two great-great-nieces and one great-great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by husband, Charles Stratman; sister, Kadi Thelen; mother, Susanna; father, Joseph; mother-in-law, Lena Stratman; brothers-in-law, Bube Thelen, Dale Stratman, Verdell Stratman and Lumir Hamsa; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Hamsa and Mary Ann Stratman.
