Luena Schmidt, 94 of Sterling, passed away Fri., June 24, 2016 in Sterling. Funeral service will be Wed., June 29 at 10:30am at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Rev. Jodie Harless officiating. Interment to follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Luena was born Oct. 20, 1921 in Lewellen, NE to Fred and Antonia Reikat Harnish. At one year of age, Luena, her parents and brother Gloyd, moved to a farm west of Fleming, CO. She attended both North and South Blackhawk grade schools. She graduated, Salutatorian, at age sixteen from Fleming High School in May of 1938. Due to the "dirty 30's" and hail storms, etc., she was unable to attend college.
She worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver prior to her marriage to Warren Schmidt on May 11, 1941 in Colorado Springs. They made their home on a farm southwest of Fleming where they farmed for fifty years until Warren's death on Sept. 12, 1991. She then moved to Sterling, Co where she lived until her death.
She was a former member of Fleming United Methodist Church and Leroy Methodist Church, and later joined Faith United Methodist Church in Sterling. She was also a former member of the 20-20 Club in Fleming.
Luena is survived by four children, son Charles Schmidt and wife Janet of Sterling; daughters Anita Woodhead and husband Ted of Cape Fair, Missouri, Judi Mitchek and husband Allen and Nancy Schmidt all of Sterling; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; brother-in-law Ellis Schmidt and wife Glenis, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Gloyd Harnish and wife Virginia and brother-in-law Howard Schmidt and wife Dorothy and second wife Maryann.
