Obituary

Lorene E. Freeman, 92, mother of Kenneth Freeman of Iliff, joined her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 8, 2012, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, at First Baptist Church, with Pastor Dave Tyree officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Lorene E. Hobbs was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Madill, Marshall County, Okla., to Elmer and Lena (Kemp) Hobbs. She graduated from the Ellsworth High School in Oklahoma.

Lorene was a member of the Iliff community since 1950, when her husband, Allen, Kenny, and her daughter, Carolyn, moved from Ponca City, Okla., to Iliff.

Lorene was a wife and mother who loved to cook and take care of her family. She met Allen C. Freeman in Madill, Okla., while she was helping her Aunt Eunie cook for construction crews. Allen was a regular at those meals, and with a twinkle in his eye, he would tell how he always got the biggest serving of pie from Lorene. It was during World War II that they were married on Jan. 21, 1941. Kenneth Allen and Carolyn Fern were born to this union.

After the war ended and Allen came home from the Navy, they lived in Ponca City, Okla., where most of Allen's family were located. In 1950, Allen and Lorene purchased the family farm south of Iliff and moved out here to start their new life. She spent 60 years in Colorado.

Lorene was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sterling. She was very active in the Southsiders Extension Club and enjoyed many lifelong friendships in the community. She enjoyed the monthly meetings where homemaking lessons were shared, along with good fellowship and good food. She was an excellent cook and had many requests for her pecan and cocunut pies.

Lorene was blessed with three grandchildren whom she adores, Lisa Freeman Schaefer and husband Jim, Brian Freeman and wife Maggie and Josh Freeman and wife Jessica. Granny, as she was fondly known to the grandchildren, laughed and played with them and had them stay overnight as often as she could. Later she was the proud Granny to six great-grandchildren.

Lorene is survived by her son, Kenneth Freeman and wife Diane of Iliff; two sisters, Helen Mann of Madill, Okla., and Betty Clark of Ozark, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Pauley of Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Lela Freeman of Iliff; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Lange in 1966; and her husband, Allen in 1990. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Lena Hobbs; sisters, Pearl Huffman, Viola Cossey and Charlene Stafford; and one brother, Preston Hobbs.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lorene Freeman Memorial.
