Lloyd Nelson Souders
1921 - 2008

Lloyd Nelson Souders, a long time resident of Sterling, passed away on Friday, September 19th surrounded by family members. Lloyd was born on September 21, 1921 in Willard, Colorado to Frank Souders and Nettie Christner. Lloyd was married to Betty (Griess) Souders in Fort Collins, Colorado on March 10, 1951. His wife Betty, elder son Jerry Souders, his wire Deborah and son Adam, all of Sterling, and also his youngest son, Rick Souders of Lakewood, Colorado, survive Lloyd. His youngest brother Dale Souders and wife Bea, of Fort Collins and three half sisters Mary Ann Miller, Viana Linnebur and Rosalee Hoffman, also survive him. His honorary son Steve Heimbegner and wife Cher of Greeley, Colorado also survive him. Lloyd's brothers Cecil, Marvin, Ray, Wayne, sister Dorothy, half sister Linda Lou and stepmother Edna Souders are all deceased. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Lloyd worked at the Welce Elevator as well as Iowa Electric Light and Power Company for over 20 years. He also worked with the Colorado Department of Transportation from 1968 - 1986. Lloyd was inducted into the US Navy in July of 1942 and served with the USS Pasadena for two years. He then Joined the third fleet of the USS Saint Paul. The Saint Paul was credited with fireing the last shot on Japan. Lloyd was awarded the Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Ribbon with one Star and the American Area Carrier Ribbon. Lloyd was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3541. He received a Bronze Coyote Award for his years of Service with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 15 in Sterling. Lloyd received his Private Pilot License for single engine aircraft in 1951. He was the recipient of the Indoor Archery State Champion Award. Lloyd taught leather craft at the Northeastern Junior College. His hobbies included leather craft, woodcarving, arrowhead hunting, making bird shovels, fishing, and watching baseball.
The Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Chaney - Reager Funeral Home at 443 South second street in Sterling. The memorial service will be followed by a luncheon at the Sterling Masonic Temple at 198 Springdale Road in Sterling. A memorial fund was set up in honor of Lloyd and his mother Nettie. Donations will be made to the Salvation Army in their honor. Donations can be sent to Souders, 1301 Ulysses St., Golden, Colo. 80401.
