Leroy 'Lee' E. Swanson

Leroy "Lee" E. Swanson, 85, of Sterling, died Dec. 10, 2007, in Sterling. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at First Presbyterian Church in Sterling with the Rev. Michelle D. Witherspoon officiating. Services will conclude at the church.
Lee was born Nov. 24, 1922, in Sutton, Neb., to Lloyd H. Swanson and Mae F. (Lehms) Swanson. He graduated from Lodgepole High School in 1941. Following his graduation, he attended one year of college before going into the service. He played football in college and was an avid sports fan.
During World War II, Lee enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 7, 1943, and was honorably discharged with a Seaman First Class (TM) (SS) rating on Dec. 5, 1945. he served as radar operator on the USS Skate, USS Tambor and the Trigger. He received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the Combat Insignia Award and the World War II Victory Medal. After his discharge, he returned to Nebraska.
On Dec. 22, 1946, he married Dorothy Ann Saddler in Sidney, Neb. They lived in Chappell, Neb., during the first years of their marriage. He worked for a number of years as a self-employed contractor. Then, he entered into the oil field industry, where he worked until 1962, when he and his family moved to Sterling. In Sterling, he owned and operated the Sterling Radiator Shop for 30 years. After a hard day's work, Lee enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. Fishing and hunting continued to be his favorite activities well into his late years.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the VFW. He also was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Lee is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann Swanson; two daughters, DeeAnn Blood and husband Paul of Greenville, S.C., and Suzanne Murray and husband Ben of Sterling; one son, Lee Swanson Jr. and wife Sharon of Sterling; one brother, Dale Swanson of Vancouver, Wash.; four grandchildren, Brandon Murray of San Diego, Jason Murray and wife Kelsi of Castle Rock, and Katie and Jessica Swanson of Sterling; two great-grandchildren, Bryan Murray and Madison Blood; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother; two brothers; one sister; one daughter, Sandra Hermann; one granddaughter, Sandy Swanson; and one grandson, Troy M. Blood.
Memorials may be made to the Lee Swanson Memorial Fund.
