Obituary

Lena Nein, 99, of Crook, died June 23, 2010, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, June 28, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, at the United Church of Crook with the Rev. David Tyree officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Sterling.

Lena (Amen) Nein was born in Fruita on Oct. 17, 1910, to David and Anna (Lebsack) Amen. She moved with her parents to Proctor in 1914. She received her education at the McKinley School and the Amen School north of Proctor and lived on the farm north of Proctor until 1932.

On Jan. 3, 1932, she married Pete Nein of Sedgwick. They lived and farmed Lena Nein in Sedgwick for two years then moved to a farm five miles west of Crook. They lived there until 1976 at which time they retired and moved to a home on the south edge of their farm where they continued to enjoy raising flowers and gardening.

Lena began playing the piano at an early age and became the church pianist as a teenager. Lena was a member of the United Church of Crook where she served as pianist and organist for more than 65 years.
Lena was a 25-year member of the Crook Extension Homemakers Club and an active member of the Crook Senior Citizens Club. Pete and Lena were honored as the King and Queen of the Crook Fair in 1982.

Lena's love for gardening and flowers showed in the arrangements that she brought to church to share each Sunday of the growing season. She was also a regular champion exhibitor at the Logan County Fair Flower show. She also loved to decorate cakes. She baked and decorated many birthday and wedding cakes for friends and relatives.

Lena is survived by her brother, Walter Amen and wife Nona of Iliff; a foster daughter, Irene Kaufman and her husband Robert and their daughter Tammi of Wheatridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Lena in death were her husband, Pete; a brother, Harry; sisters, Edna and Irene; and grandson, Bobby Kaufman; and granddaughter, Cynthia Kaufman.
