Leland Russell Hammond, 91, of Sterling, CO passed away Monday, November 13, 2023. A celebration of Leland's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 17 at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Pastor Kristie Firme officiating. Following the service, Leland will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.

Leland was born August 11, 1932, in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Lee Robert Hammond and Laura Rasmina Rasmussen. He attended school in Oklahoma. Leland enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 4, 1950, and was honorably discharged on March 20, 1953. After being discharged, he returned to the family home in Akron, where he met his sweetheart Florence Irene Hurt and they were married on August 15, 1953, in Akron, CO. Leland worked many years as a truck driver making freight deliveries for Northeastern Westway.

He was preceded in death by his wife Florence, parents Lee and Laura Hammond, sisters Iva (Virgil) Kirsey, MaryAnn (Clyde) Overton, and Jane Burdi, brothers Charles Hammond, Burt (Anne) Hammond and Carlos Hammond.

Leland is survived by his children Terry Hammond of Sterling, CO, Randy and Melissa Hammond of Mesquite, NV, Kathy and Tim Peterson of Sterling, CO, Kristi and Jeff Peterson of Platteville, CO, Karen Simpson of Pinedale, WY, and Kelley and Jess Schneider of Sterling, CO, 33 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.
