Kristin (Kris) Rebecca Nichols entered eternal life August 31, 2023. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 am, September 9th at Faith Cornerstone Church (formerly Faith United Methodist) in Sterling, CO with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Fort Morgan at 2 pm.
Kristin was born January 02, 1951, in Brush, CO to Melvin and Mary Lou Meekins. She is the oldest of two daughters. She was raised on a farm north of Fort Morgan, CO and had a love of horses growing up and was active in 4H. She had a lifelong love of singing and was part of the Morgan High singers at Fort Morgan high school, in later years she was a member of her church choirs.
She met the love of her life, Gary, as a sophomore in high school at the Morgan County fair. They were married on June 25, 1971, after a squirrel caused a 2.5-hour electrical delay in Fort Morgan. She received her associate of arts degrees in Secretarial Sciences and Early Childhood Education. They enjoyed living in college housing at Colorado State University. After Gary graduated CSU, Kris followed him to multiple cities while he trained with Farm Credit Systems until they settled in Northglenn, CO. She was an active member of the Colorado Jaycee Club while in Northglenn and Fort Morgan. While living in Northglenn their first son, Travis, was born in 1977. In 1980 they moved back home to Fort Morgan where she taught preschool at the First Presbyterian Church. In 1981 their second son, Brandon, was born. From 1980 to 1990 she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir with her parents.
In 1990 the family relocated to Sterling, and she taught preschool at the First Christian Church. She then transitioned to the NJC early childhood education center. In 2013 Gary and Kris were on the move again, they purchased a lumber yard and flooring store in Sidney, NE. She operated the flooring store until they moved back to Sterling in 2019. She was employed at American Family Insurance in Sterling until she retired in 2021. She enjoyed spending time with grandkids, following them across the country for sporting events.
Church was always a major focus in Kris's life whether she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Trinity Lutheran, and Faith Cornerstone Church in Sterling. As a member of Faith Cornerstone Church, she was the Christian Education Director, member of the book club, women's club, and multiple bible study groups. She also served as the banquet committee chairwoman for the Caring Pregnancy Resource Center.
Kris was preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Mary Lou Meekins, in-laws Cecil and Maxine Nichols, grandchild Taylor Nichols.
Kris is survived by her husband of 52 years Gary, sons Travis (Michelle), Brandon (Kristin), sister Kimberly (Chris) Delgado, grandchildren Brayden (Jaecey), Peyton (Jaylynn Hanson), Ryanne, Ashton, Elektra (Dmitri) Huschka, Remington Canfield, Keziah Canfield, great granddaughter Tallin Rose Huschka, numerous sisters-in-laws and a brother-in-law, Grand puppies GusGus, Moose, Bruzer, and Dixie, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
