Kenneth E. Garvik, 86, of Sterling, affectionally called "Doc," left this world Aug. 9, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at First Christian Church, with BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336 services. Services will conclude at the church.
He was born July 2, 1923, to Carl and Clemma (Vittetoe) Garvik in Sterling. He graduated from Sterling High School, then enlisted in the U.S. Army in May 1943 and was in the Specialized Training Service Command Unit. He was discharged in December 1944.
Kenny's love of animals helped him in his decision to go to Colorado A & M in Fort Collins to study veterinary medicine. He opened his practice in 1948 in Sterling, retiring in 1980.
Kenny loved sports and was a very dedicated fan. He flew every year to Kansas City, Mo., for the NCAA College Basketball Championship. He was also a loyal season ticket holder for the Colorado A & M and the Colorado State Rams in football until his health prevented him from attending the games. He loved watching golf and playing at every opportunity.
Kenny was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336, and you could find him every day playing scat with his friends at the club. He enjoyed getting in a good game of cribbage. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 20.
He is survived by his niece, Patricia Ingraham of Sterling; nephew, Larry Garvik of Brush; niece, Linda Stark of Cunningham, Kan.; and many great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Raymond; sister, Dorothy Bender; and many lifelong friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post No. 20 or the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336.
