IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kay
Jones
February 21, 1945 – May 24, 2025
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Patricia Kay Jones on Saturday, May 24, 2025. A celebration of Kay's life service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, June 7 at Halouska Family Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Jerry Williams as officiant. The celebration will conclude at the chapel.
Kay was born February 21, 1945, in Fort Morgan, Colorado. She was the oldest of 13 siblings. Kay had a very rough upbringing in life, and she had to grow up at a very young age to help take care of her brothers and sisters. At an early age, she moved to South Park, Colorado, where she graduated high school. Later on, she met a young gentleman who joined the army, where she gave birth to her son, Doug, while her husband was stationed in Germany.
After moving from Germany back to the United States, she worked as a waitress and bartender. Kay soon met the love of her life, Greg, who was a rancher, and only went to town about once a month. Kay was lucky to have met him. When Doug was the age of 10, they married, and a year later they gave birth to their daughter Becky.
Kay and Greg have a beautiful story to their life. After knowing each other for only three weeks, Greg presented Kay with a black mare and told her it was time to go to work. That's where they had begun their ranching journey, and it continued from Walden to Loma and Elizabeth.
Kay and Greg lived a wonderful life ranching, running cattle, which were fed with a team of horses, while Kay still worked nights as a waitress. Later they bought a place in Elizabeth, where Kay was the head cook for the school district, and she was very active with Doug in sports up until Doug graduated in 1987.
Times were tough, and an opportunity opened up for them to move closer to Greg's family on the western slope. Here Kay helped do the bookkeeping and manage Greg's Texaco gas station.
Both Kay and Greg were very busy, but in their free time they had a passion for playing golf. They tried to play golf once or twice a week, and in the wintertime, they joined a bowling league which had kept them very busy. They attended many state tournaments.
Kay was extremely fun on the golf course. She enjoyed the opportunity to play with her sister Pam, and she tried to never pass up a bowling tournament.
In 1989 Doug met Iris. Their first grandson, Justin, arrived in 1990. In 1993 the family moved to eastern Colorado where Kay still was involved with bowling. Kay also enjoyed her second grandson, Austin. Becky graduated from college and soon was married. Kay and Greg welcomed their third grandson, Houston. Then Traevin the 4th grandson, and soon the 5th, Preston, came along. Kay's grandsons were her life.
Kay worked at the hotel in Sterling as a waitress and helped with many private parties and wedding receptions. She really enjoyed decorating and had an eye for detail. When Justin started at Caliche in the first grade, she went to work at Country Corner. She enjoyed visiting with the farmers and helping in the community.
As all five of the grandsons were growing up, she helped the boys with 4H projects and soon became very involved with the school district. For 13 years she was an active member of the booster club. Brenda Zink, Brenda Huss, Kris (Debus) Becker, and Rhonda Monheiser helped her with organizing team dinners, cooking meals for the students before games, and making sandwiches and snacks.
Kay painted the sign for the scoreboard on the football field, painted the sign for the back of the dugout, and soon made the iconic football signs for the sideline for the football games. She even made the football signs for Preston's football team after moving to Cheyenne Wells.
Anyone who attended Caliche sports can still hear her yelling at all the games whether football, basketball or baseball. (Go Hit Somebody!) Kay never missed a game. Even when chemo was kicking her butt. Kay was always there!! Kay traveled to all the games, making sure the boys had drinks, and snacks. She was so loved by many and was very ornery. If you gave her guff, you sure could expected it right back. She was one to keep you on your toes.
Kay lived a long hard life, and that built her to be a strong individual and a caring mother to her children and grandsons. She didn't take any day for granted, and she made sure that everybody had the life that she didn't get to have as a child herself. She enjoyed hosting holiday dinners and would decorate everything to the nine. Her family always enjoyed going to their house to see all the little nick knack decorations and to enjoy a good home cooked meal. Kay was a phenomenal cook. Kay's daughter Becky wasn't quite ready to learn, so she would disappear to the barn. Now she regrets she didn't learn her fabulous recipes.
Kay has gone with peace in her heart and soul as she lived a life filled with love from her family. She suffered for 12 years with cancer, and cancer ended her journey.
Thanks to the wonderful nurses and staff with Hospice in making things comfortable for her. Kay thought highly of those nurses, and she enjoyed the visits with them.
Kay's family wants to encourage all of you to take each season as it comes. Enjoy every moment you have with your family; each day is not guaranteed. Thank you, God, for every morning that you wake up and your feet hit the ground and then you have one more day of life. Learn to forgive people in your heart, find satisfaction with yourself in what you do that gives you happiness and feelings of accomplishment.
As years go by time goes by even faster, so enjoy your journeys in life with never knowing when the unexpected is to come. Tell your loved ones that you love them daily and be blessed that you have the family that you have and the friends and the life that you're living. We can only choose the path that we're on by the decisions that we make.
With that being said, Kay is preceded in death by her father-in-law Dr. Quentin Jones, mother Patricia Jones, sister Pam and Michael Whiteman, numerous aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins.
Kay is survived by her husband, Greg, of 48 years, her son Doug (Iris) Jones, daughter Becky (Tyson) Pharo and Tyson's daughter Braylee; her five grandsons Justin, Austin, and Traevin Jones, Houston and Preston Hernandez; sister Annie Knotts, brother Jerry (Jan) Williams, cousin Nancy (Jack) Zeller, brothers Tim (Diana) Jones, and Terry (Diane) Dillon and numerous nephews and nieces.
