John Edward Wiebers (Ed) was born at home in the New Haven Community, Fleming, Colorado to Elmer Lee and Margaret (Maggie) Mae (Christian) Wiebers on November 13, 1929, in the middle of a blizzard. Ed was delivered by a midwife who was his Aunt Ada Wiebers. Ed didn't see a doctor until he was two months old because of the weather that winter. Ed attended the New Haven School for the first eight grades and then graduated from Fleming High School in 1948. He was drafted during the Korean War and spent his time stateside, building runways in Texas for pilot trainees. He was a proud member of the Army Corp of Engineers and completed GI school during his time in the service.

On June 13, 1954, Ed married Mary Olive Hager. They celebrated their 70th anniversary this last June. They are parents of: Loretta (Ross) Davidson, Scott (Susie) Wiebers, Ron (Gloria) Wiebers, Barbara Mease, Arlene (Tim) Carper, Darlene (Buck) Widgery, Laurie Jo (Pete) Kjosness, Janelle (Douglas) Phelps, Daniel (Tina) Wiebers, and Brenda (Kirk) Drew. They were also host parents to exchange student, Steffi Maier Frank of Germany. Family was important to Ed, and he was so proud of his children and their families, which include 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

As a young boy, Ed loved to roller skate. His father, Elmer, ran the roller rink at New Haven, so Ed grew up roller skating every Saturday night. Because he loved it so much, his children all got roller skates for Christmas one year. And at the age of 79, Ed was still able to roller skate at his granddaughter's birthday party. Ed liked to fix things, enjoyed construction and helping others in the community. He was an avid Rockies fan, and liked to travel, camp and fish.

Ed raised his family on a farm south of Fleming. His first love was Mary, but his second love was tractors. Ed loved spending time with his family during wheat harvest. For 33 campaign seasons, Ed worked at the Great Western Sugar Factory in Sterling. He started out loading the sugar sacks and moved up to supervising the pulp on the dryer. During his time at GW, he only ever missed one day of work and that was due to a family wedding. Family members feel they all got their work ethic, sense of commitment, the importance of hard work, love, strength, integrity, and compassion from him. Ed never met a stranger and was the epitome of kindness. Ed was on the New Haven Church Board, the New Haven Community Board and the Fleming Elevator Board for 12 years. He was an influential part in getting the elevator built at New Haven. He also belonged to the Farmers Union and was a life member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the Fleming Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary, parents, sister, Lila Wilson, his brothers, Art and Bill; and son-in-law, Rick Mease.

Ed is survived by his sister, Dorothy Griess, his children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations sent to the Melissa Memorial Hospital Foundation in Holyoke, Colorado in care of Halouska Family Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, PO Box 1046, Sterling, Colorado, 80751.
