Joanne H. Jefferies, 84 of Sterling, passed away Mon, May 11, 2015 in Sterling. Memorial service will be 10:30am Thurs., May 14 at Faith United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be Thurs. at 1:00 pm at Riverside Cemetery. Rev. Jodie Harless will be officiating.
Joanne was born April 8, 1931 in Canon City, CO to Ross and Georgina Whitmore Brown. She graduated from Golden High School. Joanne married Gerald W. Jefferies at Rockland Community Church, Mount Vernon Country Club, CO on April 9, 1952.
She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, was a member of Church Women United for fifteen years, serving as secretary for ten years, was also president and secretary of the Church Circle at Faith United, also serving on the church Administrative Board and the church Council on Ministries as chairman. She was a current member and past co-chariman of the Long Term Endowment Fund at Faith United. Joanne was a forty plus year member of the League of Women Voters, serving five years as president and twenty-five plus years as a board member.
Joanne co-produced two historic videos which have been shown to clubs and organizations. Small Town America – a study of small towns in Logan County and their histories and a self-guided tour of the historic homes and buildings in Sterling. She was a volunteer for twenty years at the Visitor's Center. She received a "Special Recognition" plaque from the Chamber Tourism Council, City and County in 1987.
She was Logan County Republican of the Year in 1986. Joanne received the State League of Women Voters Individual Honorable Mention for campaign to remove term limits from Logan County elective offices in 1999. The State League of Women Voters Grass Roots highest Individual Recognition for campaign to pass sales tax to build Logan County Justice Center, went to Joanne in 2001. She also received a recognition plaque from the Sterling Area League of Women Voters for campaign to remove term limits from Logan County elective offices and for campaign to pass sales tax to build Logan County Justice Center in 2001. Joanne was recognized in the Journal Advocate "Portrait of the Plains-Dedication" special issue on Feb. 24, 2001 for the Justice Center sales tax campaign.
Joanne is survived by her husband Gerald W. Jefferies of Sterling; daughter Jeri Ann Johnson and husband Ron of Imperial, NE; sons Kenneth Jefferies and husband David Humes of Woodstock, VT, Daryl Jefferies and wife Karen of Fayette, MO; grandchildren Nathan Johnson and wife Heather, Ashley Exum and husband Eric and Lindsey Brophy and husband Ben, all of Imperial, Joe Jefferies and Abbie Jefferies of Fayette; and three great-granddaughters.
Memorial may be made to the Faith United Methodist Memorial Fund or the Long-Term Endowment Fund.
