Janice Fern (Capps) Smyj, 74 of Sterling passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until Funeral service time at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 18 at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Pastor Lew Champ officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.

Janice was born December 7, 1945 in San Gabriel, California to Roy and Fern (Liffick) Capps. She met Theodore Smyj and they married on January 11, 1960 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Janice and her husband moved to Sterling in 2001 and purchased the Colonial Motel, which they owned and operated for several years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ted Smyj and brother Roy Capps.

Janice is survived by her children, Teresa Franco and husband Frank of Pella, IA, Kathy Hupke of Sterling, CO and Ted Smyj and wife Diane of Corona, CA; sister Tina Harmon of Fruitland, ID; brothers Tim Capps and John Capps and wife Patty, all of Golden Valley, AZ; grandchildren: Tisha Hupke, Stephanie "Steffi" Hupke, Bobbie Hupke, Kayla Hupke, Tara Parker and husband Chris, Mike "Mikey" Franco, Andrew Franco, Laura Franco, Jennifer Heeg and husband Art and Kevin Smyj; great-grandchildren: Amelia, Kaden, Dakota Rae, Riker, Tristin, Jayden, Mason, Emilynn, Lincoln, Olivia, and Caleb.
