James Edward Lowery (Jim, Jimmy), 94, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 30, 2022. He was surrounded by family holding his hands and telling life stories. What a dash he lived. 1927-2022. Viewing will be held from 4 -7 p.m., Wednesday, February 2 at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3 at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Rev. Michelle Witherspoon officiating. Burial will follow at Sedgwick Cemetery in Sedgwick, CO.
Jim was born on March 20, 1927, in Sedgwick, CO to Lester and Nellie Lowery. He was born at home, and that home is still standing today. He was one of 6 kids. He learned to work hard at a very young age while working at different farms and ranches in the Proctor/Crook area. Chores were not called chores … one did what one had to do for the family. He attended Crook Schools.
He enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1944 and was deployed to Italy where he served his country as Military Police as he drove around Officers. Jim was honorably discharged in 1946. He was very proud to have served his country.
Jim married Mary Bradford in 1947 and they settled in Sterling, CO. They began their own auto repair/service/fuel station in 1971. It was named MOSCO (Most Outstanding Service Company). MOSCO was known for its honest practices, and it kept many families' vehicles going. They adopted a son, James and a daughter, Pam. Their already busy lives became full of school events, FFA, rodeo and Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts was always a passion for Jim. He became a Boy Scout leader (Troop 17). He enjoyed travelling with his family to Ben Delatour Scout Ranch in Red Feather Lakes. He worked with the young scouts on not only survival skills, but also on life ethics. His impact was priceless.
Jimmy was instrumental in the local AA. His phone was always ringing with friends, or soon to be friends, looking for help in dealing with their addictions. He was the man of "second chances." That mindset saved countless lives.
Jim sold MOSCO in the early 90's. But the thought of retiring was not in his mind. Jim then traveled around the US hauling carnival rides. He visited many states. After that, he began driving for County Express, a Sterling community transit that helps people get where they need to go. He loved getting up at 4 a.m. to get there early to check the mechanics and overall condition of the bus. He loved the people, the stories, and driving. He retired at age 89 from County Express.
In Jimmy's later years, he met his best friend, Betty Ann Gandee. Soon after, he found his little mutt buddy Scheister. These three were unstoppable. They would regularly go out to local diners, events, drive up to Sydney or Cheyenne. They would pack their sleeping bags to join their kids on adventures that included Estes Park, Yellowstone, the PNW, and his favorite … the Poudre Canyon. One would also find them sitting on the swing he built, watching the world go by. He loved working on the lawn and house. Those years were some of Dads favorites, as he was able to continue living at his own home independently until his death. An amazing trio, Betty Ann brought so many fun memories and trips throughout Jimmy's later years.
Jim lived his entire life in Northeastern Colorado. Visiting him, we could not go anywhere without someone shaking his hand or patting him on the back. He made friendships that lasted a lifetime. Sterling was kind to Jim. He loved living and working in this community. The family would like to thank all who knew him, loved him, and shook his hand with a "What's up Jimmy?". You are the reason why he so loved this community of Sterling, Co.
Jimmy was proceeded in death by his wife Mary Lowery; his parents, Lester and Nellie Lowery; brothers and sister, Alvin, Wayne, Lorne, Donny and Alice.
Jimmy is survived by his best friend, Betty Ann Gandee; his little mutt buddy Scheister; his son, James Lowery, daughter-in-law Andrea and granddaughter Melissa of New Jersey; and his daughter Pam Chan, son-in-law Wayne, and granddaughter Katie of Seattle, WA. Uncle Jim is survived by several nieces and nephews that were very close to his heart. Trista Lowery-Waterman and husband Jeff and little ones, Gus and Rory. Nicole Lowery-Boettcher and husband Zach and little ones, Ollie and Jamsey. Kenneth Lowery and family, Shawn Lowery and family. `
The best way to remember and honor our Dad Jimmy would be to approach our fragile, fleeting life just as he did: wholeheartedly, making memories, helping neighbors. Be generous …
