Obituary

********Please note that the service for Jim will now be held at the chapel.********

James "Jim" Doris of Sterling, passed away on Thursday, January 30th, 2025, in Brush, Colorado with his wife by his side after a long battle with cancer. A Celebration of Jim's life will be held at Halouska Family Chaney-Reager Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 7th, 2025. Inurnment will be held at Riverside cemetery at a later date.

Jim was born October 13, 1943in Garden City, Kansas to Leo "Doodle" and Nellie (Wallace) Doris. The family lived in Dighton, Kansas and he attended Dighton schools and graduated from Dighton High School.

On June 24, 1964, Jim married Kathleen Barnett in Ensign, Kansas.  To this union 3 children were born Michael, Lawrence, and Kerrie. The family lived in Dighton until they moved to Alliance, Nebraska where he continued his career in working for power companies.  In 1982 Jim and Kathleen moved back to Dighton where Kathleen passed due to an auto accident.

On June 17, 1989, Jim married Shirley Sculley in Dighton, Kansas and added 2 more children to his family with Bobby and Ellen Sculley.  Jim and Shirley moved to Sterling in 1990 to begin their lives as motel managers at the Sterling Super 8 and Sterling/Majestic apartments.  Jim continued this career path until his health would no longer allow it.

Jim had hobbies that included hunting, fishing and woodworking.  Many afternoons were spent smoking cigars in the backyard shop working on projects.  Every year a trip was made to the mountains for elk hunting.   We always saw lots of supplies going up but not many elk coming back.  We always joked that they just went up to play cards and get away.  His knife collection continued to grow with every trip, as they would enter a stop where the first place Jim would go would be the knives.  Cabela's was a favorite place for Jim to visit, never leaving without buying his supply of fudge.  Jim was a simple man that the song "Hunting, Fishing, and Loving Every day" could have been wrote about.

He is preceded in death by his parents Leo and Nellie Doris, his first wife Kathleen Doris, son Michael Doris, daughter Kerrie Horsfall; 3 grandchildren Susan and Jordan Doris, and Maegan Sculley; mother-in-law Hazel Smith, brother and sister-in-law Carl Smith and Peggy Alcott and his beloved pet Keshia, who was his constant companion.

Jim is survived by wife Shirley Doris of Sterling; children Larry and Suzie of McCook, Nebraska, Phil Horsfall of Great Bend, Kansas, Bobby and Amanda Sculley of Salem, South Dakota, and Ellen and Brett Belmeyer of Dalton, Nebraska; siblings Keith and Shelley Doris of Florence, Arizona, Linda Schmalzried of McPherson, Kansas, Paul and Loretta Smith of Akron, Colorado and Jim and Juanita Pyle of Evans, Colorado.  Also surviving are grandchildren Levi and Brooke Doris, Kathleen and Seth Chancellor, Ian Doris, Laura and Nelson Martinez, Kristin and Raul Rocha, Makenna Sculley, Autumn Grennell, Bobbi Sculley, Johnathan Sculley and Matthew Shephard, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
