Obituary

Howard Hoxie, age 92, of Sterling, Colorado, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 28th at 10:30 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Sterling, with Reverend Spencer Green officiating. A luncheon will follow the service, and inurnment with military honors will take place afterward at Riverside Cemetery.

Howard was born on June 20, 1933, in Denver, Colorado, to Louis and Essie Hoxie. The youngest of three boys, he spent his early years in Denver before moving to Sterling for part of high school, later returning to Denver to graduate. He attended college at CSU before being drafted into the U.S. Army. While stationed in England, he met the love of his life, Dorothy, and the two were married there in 1955.

After his military service, Howard and Dorothy made their home west of Sterling, where they raised their four children. In the early 1970s, Howard began a long career as a truck driver for Montgomery Ward, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He loved the open road, his CB radio, and the friendships he made along the way. His CB handle was affectionately known as "The Colorado Sod Buster."

Howard was also a proud Mason and Shriner, deeply valuing the fellowship and community service that came with his membership.

After retiring in 1995, Howard and Dorothy sold the family home and spent many winters traveling and enjoying time in Arizona. Howard was a natural storyteller with a remarkable memory for the past — better than any history book, as his family fondly recalls. He loved photography, reminiscing through old photo albums, and tracing his family's genealogy.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and his beloved wife, Dorothy Hoxie.

Howard is survived by his children Debbie (Jack) Doyel, Julia (Lee Coleman) Hoxie, Dale (Teresa) Hoxie, and Wendy (John) Jerman; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Plains, 302 N. 9th Ave., Sterling, CO 80751 in gratitude for the compassionate care they provided to Dorothy during her illness.
