Herbert Henderson Vandemoer passed away December 13, 2016 at 94 years old. He will be laid to rest privately at the Sterling Riverside Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at Overland Trail Museum High Plains Education Center in Sterling, CO at 1:00pm on Thursday, January 26th, 2017. Sterling was Herb's home no matter where he resided.
Herb was born August 7, 1922 in Denver, Colorado to Herbert Robinson Vandemoer and Isabel Henderson Vandemoer. He had two younger sisters, Marion M. Vandemoer and Nancy Vandemoer Hill; both preceded him in death.
Herb graduated East High School in Denver and went on to play football and run track at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. His education was put on hold when Herb enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as Lieutenant aboard an LST in the European Theatre during WWII. Following the war, he returned to Colorado College for one more year of football. After graduating with a BA in Geology, he married Lydia Filonowicz and moved to Sterling to work for his grandmother at Geo. A. Henderson Co.
Herb never really retired; he was President of the family business Geo. A. Henderson Co. for 60 years, served on the board of Sterling Lumber and Investment Co., Farmers Pawnee Canal Co., the State Water Board, Iliff & Platte Valley Ditch, Northeastern Water Conservancy District and the Colorado Water Pollution Control Committee.
Herb loved the outdoors. Whether he spent the day hiking the desert canyons of Utah with his wife and dear friends,or fishing in Taylor Park with his family,or downhill skiing on the slopes of Aspen with his children and grandchildren, it was always the best day ever.
Herb forged a 94-year trail of generosity, compassion and youthfulness. His legacy would be impossible to imitate and is agift to his family for generations to come.
He is survived by his wife, Lydia Vandemoer; three children, Cory Vandemoer and spouse Mert Richards, Craig Vandemoer and spouse Marti Stahlman, Chris Vandemoer and spouse Cindy Vandemoer; two beloved granddaughters, Isabel and Phoebe Vandemoer; three step-grandchildren, Trevor Harris and spouse Brittany, Ashley Weiss, Meghan Geiger and spouse Eric, and their families.
