Obituary

Helen Rose Shield, 90, of Sterling, died March 3, 2010, in Sterling. Visitation will be until 4 p.m. today, March 4, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 5, at Christ United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jodie Harless officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.

She was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Sterling to Henry and Barbara (Wink) Schumann. She attended a one-room school called Beet Land between Atwood and Merino.

On March 20, 1948, she married Donald D. Shield in Kearney, Neb.
Mrs. Shield worked at Woolworths and the Sterling Heights Nursing Home. After her husband's death in 1968, she worked as a housekeeper for Frank and Gloria Walsh.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, and a longtime member of the Sterling Garden Club. She judged flowers at the Logan County Fair.
Mrs. Shield loved playing cards, doing crafts and, above all, spending time in her yard and flower garden.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Valdez of Sterling; son, Roger Shield of Hickory, N.C.; sister, Mildred Dick and husband Gerald of Windsor; grandchildren, Lori Sanders of Sterling, Joell Bourn of Fredrick, Todd Shield of Omaha, Neb., and Ryan Shield of Chadron, Neb.; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Shield; sisters, Amelia Mitchell, Pauline Hessler; brothers, Henry Schumann Jr., Clarence Schumann; and parents, Henry and Barbara Schumann.
