On February 12, 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, Lenard Koester. They farmed on the Koester homestead, 12 miles west of Padroni, where they raised two sons, Danny & Doug. In 1979 they moved to the town of Padroni, where she began running the Padroni Post Office.

Helen was a school bus driver for RE-1 Valley School District from 1969 to 1998. She was the Secretary/Treasurer for the Padroni Alumni. She helped organize the banquet held each year. Helen also spent the last 36 years as the Padroni Postmaster. The post office was an important part of her life as she continued to work at keeping it open. She was able to close her daily duties in the post office on the day she passed away.
Helen enjoyed spending time with her family, watching sports (especially the Rockies, Duke & Caliche), attending Logan County Fair, handing out All-Around Belt Buckles for the kids rodeo, making "Hel-a-roos", playing gin & hosting Padroni Goof-off on Friday mornings. In her younger years, Helen enjoyed volunteering at the kids 4-H rodeo, dressing up for Halloween, camping, dancing at dutch hops, listening to the Polk-a-Nuts, farming, decorating cakes, giving haircuts, doing permanents, sewing, & gardening, along with many other things.
