Harold Milton "Stubby" Kautz

Harold Milton "Stubby" Kautz, 82, of Sterling, died March 7, 2007, in Englewood. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at First English Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Andrew Dimit officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, with military graveside rites.

Mr. Kautz was born Aug. 4, 1924, in Iliff to Michael H. and Elizabeth (Fritzler) Kautz. He graduated from high school in Iliff in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1945-1947. On Dec. 14, 1947, he married Evelyn A. Keil in Sterling.

His passion was farming and repairing and fixing machinery, and he was a Top 10 beet grower for many years. He was also a member of the Crook Fire Department, Farm Credit Services for 29 years, a lifetime member of the American Legion and a board member of the Harmony Ditch Co. and the Prewitt Reservoir Board. He was an elder and Sunday school teacher at Faith English Lutheran Church in Crook and at First English Lutheran Church in Sterling. He enjoyed his grandchildren and their sports.

Mr. Kautz is survived by his wife, Evelyn Kautz of Sterling; his daughters, Sherryl Clevenger and husband Rex of Imperial, Neb., Deborah Orr and husband Clair of Kersey, Shawna Roche and husband Joe of Sterling; his brothers, Fred Kautz of Iliff, Herman Kautz of Nipomo, Calif., Raymond Kautz of Visalia, Calif., and Henry Kautz of Littleton; his sister, Virginia Talbott of Sterling; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alec Kautz and Edward Kautz, and two infant sisters.
