Gordon A. Carter, Jr., 83, of Sterling CO, passed away of cancer Thursday, April 21, 2022. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at First Baptist Church. Gordon's ashes will be interred along with the ashes of his late wife, Deanna Carter, in the columbarium at Riverside Cemetery at a later date.
Gordon, known as Junior to his family, was the middle child of five, born March 5, 1939 in Russell, KS to Gordon and Phyllis (Fisher) Carter. He grew up in Russell, Great Bend, and Wilson, KS. He and his brother, Lloyd, worked and played hard on the farm and the family business, Fisher's Chicken Hatchery. The Carter family moved to Sterling, CO in 1954. Gordon attended Sterling High School where he was on the basketball team, and graduated in 1957. Born into a truck driving family, Gordon began his lifelong love with trucks by being a swamper (trucker's assistant) with his dad with an oil field trucking company. He then began a long association with Allen Mitchek at Mitchek Trucking and met his future wife, Deanna Thompson, there, marrying in 1967. They established their home in Sterling where they raised their two children, Timothy and Tamyra. He then worked his way to being an independent owner operator of Carter Trucking. Gordon decided to go into semi-retirement and, divested himself of all his trucking equipment. Gordon was later drawn back into trucking, driving for Dallas Langley of Sidney, NE.
Gordon and Dene enjoyed attending daughter Tammy's college basketball games and Dene's dance competitions, visiting son Tim in Wichita, and travelling to various NASCAR races around the country. After his retirement, Gordon enjoyed morning coffee with friends at a local restaurant, viewing NASCAR races and his favorite teams play – UConn women's basketball and Duke men's basketball.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna, parents Gordon and Phyllis Carter, sister Roberta Hradecky, and brothers Lloyd Carter and George Carter.
Gordon is survived by his children Timothy Carter of Wichita, KS and Tamyra Carter of Lakewood, CO, sister Gwen Hampton and husband Fred of Tulsa, OK, and brother-in-law John Hradecky of Sterling, CO. Many nieces and nephews also survive him.
