Glenis V. Schmidt, 95 of Sterling passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Visitation will be 1 – 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15 with family receiving friends from 4 -6 p.m. at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Sat. Sept. 16 at Faith United Methodist Church with Pastor Sharon Strauss officiating. Burial will follow at the Leroy Cemetery.
Glenis was born April 5, 1922 in Leroy, Colorado to Herman Henry and Nettie Matilda (Grauberger) Sonnenberg. Glenis graduated from Harding High School and the University of Colorado with a teaching degree. Her teaching career consisted of teaching in Lakewood, CO, Fort Morgan and Fleming Frenchman Schools for over 30 years. She loved talking about all of her former students.
She married Ellis E. Schmidt on August 18, 1948 at the Leroy Evangelical Church. They lived on the family farm for 64 years in Fleming and then moved to Sterling in Sept. 2012. Glenis and Ellis traveled the world visiting many countries. They also loved watching the Colorado Rockies Baseball team and enjoyed going to the games and spring training in Arizona.
Glenis was an avid quilter, quilting by hand over 80 quilts. She gave these quilts to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and special friends. She was a member of the Leroy United Methodist Church, Leroy UMW, Leroy Tri LC Club and the Thursday Study Club. She also taught Sunday School at the Leroy UMC for over 60 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Delores Sonnenberg and Geraldine Anderson.
Glenis is survived by her husband Ellis; children, Lenee (Ron) Wisdom of Sterling, CO, Gary (Gail) Schmidt of Fleming, CO and Lyle (Cindy) Schmidt of Windsor, CO; 7 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.
