Gayln Aurel Wagner

Gayln Aurel Wagner, 72, of Sterling, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, in Sterling. Inurnment will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336, with Deacon Ronald Michieli officiating.
Galyn was born Nov. 1, 1935, to Aurel H. and Esther E. (Nelson) Wagner. He attended Pleasant Divide and Mt. Hope country schools, graduating from Sterling High School in 1952.
He entered the U.S. Army on March 24, 1954, and served with the 13th Infantry Regiment at Fort Carson. He participated in atomic tests at Camp Desert Rock in 1955 and was MSG Center Chief.
After his discharge March 23, 1956, Gayln returned to Sterling, where he farmed, owned a real estate firm and built homes until 1985. He spent nine years with a truck leasing company and has been seasonally employed by Colorado State Parks until his death.
Gayln was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a life member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336, and a Past District Governor of Lions International. He also enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Boren and husband Dennis of Sterling, and her family, Jennifer Boren, TSgt Todd Boren and wife SSgt Heather and children Alex, Kyle and Ethan, Micheal Boren, SrA Christopher Boren and wife Takeysha and children Jace, Ryan and Ariah; daughter, Joy L. Holland of Las Vegas and her family, Chelsey Holland and Johnna Holland; daughter, Lisa A. Darrow and husband Patrick of Meeker, and her family, Jessica Smith, Rachel Smith and Becka Darrow; son, Gary G. Wagner and wife Kathryn of Casper, Wyo., and his family, Holly Wagner and Jami Wagner; and sisters, Audrey L. Healey and husband Lynn and Wanda I. Lambert and husband Dennis, all of Sterling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aurel and Esther Wagner.
A humorous remembrance of Gayln comes from his grandchildren, Jennifer and Todd Boren, on the last week of his life. They can hear Gayln saying, "It takes about a week to climb the stairs to Heaven when you have bad knees."
Memorial contributions may be made to Laradon Hall at the Elks Lodge, the American Diabetes Association or Woodland Park Lions Camp.
