Fredrick "Fritz" Ronald Johnstone, 64, of Sterling, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at this home after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Bank of Colorado Event Center with Art Roth officiating. Inurnment will take place at Riverside Cemetery following the services.
Fritz was born Dec. 14, 1944, to Earl and Ila Mae Johnstone. He grew up in Sauk Rapids, Minn.
On Aug. 1, 1965, he married Sharon Kay Hollingsworth in Julesburg. He worked for Safeway and the sugar beet factory.
In 1970, Fritz and Sharon moved to Sterling, where he worked for Sterling Milk Company until his death. Fritz was a dedicated employee who was always on call as a food supplier to area restaurants and community establishments.
Mr. Johnstone loved athletics, whether it be as a participant, spectator or as an official. If there was a ball game, Fritz was there. He was a director, coach and long-time member of the Sterling Baseball Organization and enjoyed driving the NJC baseball bus. Frtiz was a referee of football, basketball and baseball for more than 35 years. He recruited and mentored many new officials. One of the proudest moments for Fritz was in February 2009, when he was introduced by his son as an honorary member of the Colorado Board 4 Officials Organization.
Fritz enjoyed motorcycle touring, coffee at the J & L, and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was a very proud "Papa Fritz."
Mr. Johnstone is survived by his wife, Sharon Johnstone; his daughter, Deb Johnstone of Evans and fiancé Brian Leafgren of Lucerne; son, Wade Johnstone and wife Jamie of Iliff; three brothers, Bob Johnstone and wife Jill; Tom Johnstone and wife Dianne; John Johnstone and wife Lori; two sisters, Jo Harguth and husband Kevin and Beth Johnstone, all of Minnesota; grandchildren, Madyson and Treyson Johnstone of Iliff.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Ila Mae; brother, Bill; and father- and mother-in-law, Gene and Agnes Hollingsworth.
