Obituary

On Saturday, April 13, 2024, Fred Campbell Jr., 94, entered his eternal home and is now at peace in the arms of our Lord.  A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 18, at First English Lutheran Church, in Sterling. Fred will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.

Fred was born July 12, 1929, in Melbeta, Nebraska to Fred Sr. and Myrtle (Thurman) Campbell.  He moved with his family to Willowcreek, Oregon in 1936 where the family worked until 1941.  They then moved to Vancouver, Washington until Fred Sr's death in the shipyards in 1943.  At that time the family returned to Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Fred graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1947. On September 4, 1949, Fred married his high school sweetheart, Alvera Schroeder, in Scottsbluff.

Fred began working for the Star Herald in Scottsbluff during his high school years and continued to work there until January 1956.  The family moved to Sterling where Fred managed High Plains Printing Company.  In 1959, he became the general manager and president of the printing company and began acquiring an ownership interest.  He was known for his extra attention to each print job, even going to the extra effort of delivering the print job.  He retired in 1998 but continued to work part time for several more years.

Fred was a member of First English Lutheran Church.  He served as an usher and became head usher for several years.  He also served on the Board of Trustees.

He looked forward to playing golf with many friends and business acquaintances he had made during his working years.  Fred enjoyed attending the many activities his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in.  He delighted in playing games and putting puzzles together with them.

Fred will be sorely missed by his loving wife of 74 years, Alvera, his children:  Bruce Campbell (Sheri) of Fort Collins, Jeri Howard (John) of Boulder; grandchildren:  Jason Campbell, Curtis Campbell (Sarah) of Fort Collins, Jeremy Felix (Katie) of Frederick, Danielle Lynn of Lyons, Bryce Howard of Longmont; great-grandchildren:  Anna Campbell, Ian Campbell, Soren Campbell, Emilie Campbell, Gavin Lynn, Elsie Lynn, Brody Felix, Connor Felix; and his sister, Clarice Jones of Fort Collins.  His parents, Fred Sr. and Myrtle (Thurman) Campbell and his sister, Ruby Anderson, preceded him in death.

Donations in Fred's memory can be made to First English Lutheran Church, 725 Fairhurst St., Sterling, CO 80751 or Hospice of the Plains, 302 N. 9th Ave., Sterling, CO 80751.
