Gene was born December 14, 1929 in Haxtun, Colorado to Henry and Katherine Stumpf. He attended school in Crook, Colorado and graduated from Crook High School in 1948. Gene and his twin brother, Ernie, were involved in athletics all through high school. They lived on the family farm in Crook and helped with various farming responsibilities.

Gene attended Northeastern Junior College where he and his brother both played basketball for two years. Upon completion of NJC, both Gene and Ernie were drafted into the Korean War where they were stationed together in Japan. They served in the Army for two years. After Gene's service in the army, he was employed by Bethlehem Steel Company for many years. He then went to work for Ceres Land Company as an accountant. After several years, he was then employed by RE-1 Valley School District for 20 years as the business manager until his retirement. After his retirement from the school district, Gene started a real estate career where he completed his Bachelor's degree through Regis University. He worked in the real estate business for a number of years.

Gene met the love of his life, Lucy Schuppe. They were married August 15, 1954 in Sterling where they shared their life together. They were blessed with twins, Donna and Doug, in 1956.  Gene and Lucy were lifelong companions. Usually when you'd see one, you'd see the other. They enjoyed many things together and were a great team in life. One of their favorite activities was attending CU football games together. They had season tickets for over 30 years.

Gene is survived by his son, Doug Stumpf and his wife Shelly, of Sterling; twin brother, Ernie and his wife Ruth Stumpf of Greeley, CO; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy, daughter, Donna Whitmore, and his parents, Henry and Katherine Stumpf.

Gene was loved by many and will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
