Obituary

Dwight William "Bill" Simmons, 81, of Sterling, passed away Aug. 22, 2009, in Sterling. A private memorial service in celebration of his life will be at a later date in California. After cremation, his monument will be erected at the Christian Cemetery in the Peetz area.

He was born Aug. 12, 1928, in Long Beach, Calif., the son of the late Cecelia (Callen) Simmons and Ervin Lee Simmons. He had a late brother, Duane Simmons of Highland, Calif., whose wife, Geraldine Simmons and their daughter, Carol, reside in Redlands, Calif., and son, Keith, in Monterey, Calif.

He married Dorothy Jean Bivens on Oct. 25, 1947, in San Bernardino, Calif.

Bill began his 36 year career with Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company on acclaimed drilling "Rig No. 5" and later became manager of the Shell Oil parts warehouse for the Ventura and Ojai oil fields in California.

Bill received a personal commendation from Shell Oil for having the best oil field drilling safety record in the nation in 1954. In 1963, "Rig No. 5" set a national record drilling a well to 4,780 feet, on Signal Hill in Long Beach in nine hours.

He and Jean lived in Santa Paula, Calif., for more than 40 years before moving to Sterling after retirement.

Bill loved life. He liked to "putter," creating and repairing this and that. He enjoyed gardening, his home, but most of all his family.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jean Simmons of Sterling; son, John Ervin Simmons and wife Susan (Frisbee) of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; daughter, Dale Jean Covington and husband James Robert of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Mary (Covington) Wolfe, Ellen (Covington) Hyunh of Redlands, William Covington of Torrance, Calif., Christopher James, Cathleen Marian and April Jane Covington of Big Bear Lake, Amie Lea Simmons of Manhattan Beach; three great-grandchildren, Aidan and Elise Hyunh, Melody Wolfe of Redlands.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society care of Chaney -Reager Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1046, Sterling, CO 80751, which will go toward cancer research, given in his name.
