November 21, 1937 – February 8, 2018
Dorothy Mary Violet Hoxie, 80 of Sterling, CO passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018. She entered heaven surrounded by her loving family. There will be a celebration of her life at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 17 th at Christ United Methodist Church located at 104 S. 4 th Street in Sterling. A luncheon will follow the service.
Dorothy was born in Peterborough, England on Nov 21, 1937 as the only child of Harold and Violet Bellamy. She grew up during WWII and recalled hearing the air raid sirens and fleeing to shelters with her gas mask. She loved to read, ride her bicycle, and attend plays and dances with her father. She met Howard Hoxie when she was sixteen while he was stationed in England as an Army medic. Howard proposed to her many times before she finally said yes. They were married in the Church of England in Peterborough on February 19, 1955, immigrating to the US on a Naval ship shortly thereafter. The voyage was eight days and she was seasick the entire journey!! She became a US citizen in 1959.
She and Howard raised four children on a farm west of Sterling. She didn't know how to drive when she arrived but soon taught herself to avoid being stranded with small children seven miles from town. Dorothy was devoted to her family and was a woman of strong faith.
She was a longtime member of the Christ United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, and was always cooking and baking for various events and bazaars. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi and the Red Hats Society. She and Howard enjoyed their motorhome and were involved in the RV Roamers with the Shriners organization.
She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Howard, daughters, Debbie (Jack) Doyel, Julia Hoxie, and Wendy (John) Jerman; one son, Dale (Teresa) Hoxie; eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations to Hospice of the Plains in care of Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, PO Box 1046, Sterling, CO 80751.
