Dorothy Stone was born July 10, 1930, in Lorenzo, Texas, the fourth of six children of Elmer E. and Ora Criss Stone. Her first few years were spent in Texas and Wyoming before moving to Eaton and Greeley, Colorado. These were hard years for her and her family as they struggled through the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. Dorothy attended Greeley High School (now Greeley Central). In 1946 her mother Ora died forcing 15-year-old Dorothy to find work before graduating. While working as a carhop at Jess' Drive-Inn in Greeley she met Merlin Berg who was attending college in Fort Collins. The couple married in Sidney, Neb., on Nov. 9,1947, and shared nearly 66 years together. Merlin and Dorothy had two sons, Michael and Ronald.
Following their marriage, Dorothy & Merlin lived for a time in Dailey, Colorado. From Dailey, the couple moved to Greeley briefly and then to Sterling. Her beloved Merlin passed away in 2013. Dorothy ultimately called Sterling home for over 71 years.
During her years in Sterling Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper at Farmers Insurance Group and Bill's Motor Company. In 1972 she became credit manager for Logan County Hospital, where she remained until her retirement in 1985.
Reading, golf, knitting, crocheting, gardening, playing pinochle with her family and card group, watching old westerns, and listening to her country music and other albums were among Dorothy's favorite pastimes.
Mrs. Berg is survived by her loving family: son Ronald Berg and wife Soile of Colorado Springs; brother Hollis Stone of Greeley; daughter-in-law Barbara Berg of Littleton; sister-in-law Mary Ann Berg of Sterling; grandson Joshua Berg and wife Nancy of Colorado Springs; granddaughter Jennifer Vandermeer and husband Trevor of Vejle, Denmark; granddaughter Courtney Neher of Colorado Springs; granddaughter Amanda Berg of Aurora; six great grandchildren: Madelynn and Josiah Berg, Ruby and Lyla Skiles, all of Colorado Springs; Olivia and Evelyn Vandermeer of Vejle, Denmark; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Merlin Berg; parents, Ora, and E.E. Stone; son Michael D. Berg; sisters Helen Anderson, Wilma Reddish, and Barbara Aileen Anderson; and brother Harold Stone.
