Donald Keith Smith, 82 of Sterling, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2016 in Sterling. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 10:00 am at Sterling Foursquare Church with Pastor Ben Hackbarth officiating. Inurnment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Don was born June 6, 1933 in Pasadena, CA to William A. and Edna Theriault Smith. Don attended Beverly Hills High School and Harvard Military School.
Don entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954.
Don moved to Delta, CO with his father and step-mother to farm and ranch until he enrolled in Colorado State University to pursue his law degree. He then moved to Sterling where he joined the law firm of Sandhouse and Sandhouse. In 1964 Don opened his private law practice which continued 50 years until retirement.
On Sept. 27, 1986 he married Cheryl E. Bigg in Sterling, CO.
Don was a member of the 4-H Foundation, Cattlemen's Association, Chamber of Commerce, a board member and past president of the House Delegates of High Plains Easter Seals and a charter member of the Logan County Advisory Extension Board.
Don attended Sterling Foursquare Church, was a life member of BPO Elks Lodge 1336, the American Legion Post 20, 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge No 54, AF&AM and the White Shrine of Jerusalem No 3.
His hobbies included a passion for horses, hunting, cooking, reading and discussing political issues and was an active member of the Republican Party. His greatest love was watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow, strive for and achieve their dreams.
Don is survived by his wife Cheryl E. Smith; children Kim Smith-Morford and husband Ron of Loveland, CO, John Becker of Moorcroft, WY, Patricia Rittenhouse and husband Michael of Highlands Ranch, CO, Timothy Slater and wife TJ of Loma, CO; brother Robert Smith of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren Tyler Mix and Kayla Mix, Zade and Austin Becker, Tori Slater and Cassie Rittenhouse and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Margaret, brothers Gordon Smith and Kenneth Smith, sisters Carol Lee Smith and Frances Jane Crawford and nephew Drew Smith.
