Obituary

Donald D. Dennington, 76, of Sterling, passed away on Feb. 13 in Sterling. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at First English Lutheran Church with the Rev. Andrew Dimit officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Don was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Bowlegs, Okla., to Homer Travis and Rose Ellen Dennington. He attended school in Bowlegs, and upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Korean War. He was discharged in June 1953 after serving the majority of five years in Japan and Korea.

On May 2, 1954, he married Maxine Harris in Sterling. He worked for an oil field supply company throughout Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Texas until 1972, when they returned to Sterling and farmed for several years. He retired from Colt Repair in 1997. He is well remembered as being friendly to all he met.

One of his great joys in life was coaching and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. He was a certified baseball umpire and coached baseball and softball many years. He also enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.

He was a member of First English Lutheran Church and had held many offices in the church. He was a former member of the VFW, American Legion and Sterling Lions Club.

Don is survived by his wife, Maxine of Sterling; son, Gregg and wife LeeAnn; daughter, Brenda and husband Mark Rhodes; and son, Kent; all of Sterling. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Derek Dennington of Greeley, Denise Dennington, and Alison and Travis Rhodes of Sterling. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister, all of Oklahoma, several nieces and nephews, and one sister-in-law, Marcia Slatter of Loveland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Richard and Lorena Harris; sister, Jean Rose; and brother-in-law, Mike Slatter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the NJC Foundation for scholarships or to First English Lutheran Church.
