Derrick Matthews

Derrick Matthews, 57, of Sterling passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2026, with his loving family by his side.

Viewing with family to receive friends will be held from 4-6 p.m., Monday, May 4, at Halouska Family Chaney-Reager FH. A celebration of Derrick’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, May 5 at Halouska Family Chaney-Reager FH with Reverend Jared Sonnenberg officiating. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Derrick was born July 21, 1968, in New Orleans, LA to Mable Lee Matthews and Roosevelt Bickham Jr. Derrick married Shawna Brawley on January 19, 2024, in Sterling, CO.

Derrick worked for Trinidad Benham for 17 years until he had to retire due to his health. He also worked for the railroad in Kansas and did lots of jobs in New Orleans. Derrick was always full of life; he would make anyone that he encountered smile or laugh. He was a member of the Friday Night Early Birds bowling league, he loved to BBQ, fish, and he loved to do yard work. He was always outside mowing lawns and weed eating.

Derrick was a die-hard New Orleans Saints fan. He loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Mable Matthews and Roosevelt Bickham Jr; brother Tracy Matthews; uncles Eddie Matthews and Kevin Dorsett; grandmas Bertha Matthews and Darlene “Grannie Bae” Hradecky; grandparents Harold and Louisa Banks; and cousin Ty Stettner.

Derrick is survived by his wife Shawna Matthews; children Kyle Strecker of Sterling, SheaLynn (Damien) Murphy of Sterling, Mason (Ashley) Brawley of Sterling, Cheyenne (Josh) Looney of Fleming, Jasmine (Sarah) Figueroa of Sterling, Derrick Augillard of New Orleans, LA, Jordan (Alexandra) Cooper of Englewood, CO, Patrick Cooper of Oregon; brother Cleveland Matthews of New Orleans, LA, sister Toni Marshall of New Orleans, LA, sister-in-law Daisy (Aric) Cooper, nieces Jamecia and Danica, nephew Keegan of Greeley, CO, brother-in-law Gary (Kristi) Mix, nephews AJ, Vinny and Frankie of Greeley, CO, mother-in-law Audrey Mix of Sterling, CO, fur babies Luna and Nola. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kaden, Elijah, Dominick, Gaby, Amara, Ruby, Jensen, Gabriel, Penelope, Paisley, Mia, and Ryan and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
